# Lyrics songcraft: TARAS vs OUR song-v02 (as song lyrics, not as advertorial)

Author role: Ukrainian songwriter / vocal coach. Three texts compared:

| key | text used | source of truth |
|---|---|---|
| ORIGINAL | 65 English caption cards (owner-approved), 0–188.5 s | `runs/video-dna-v1/targ/analysis.json` → `captions`; ASR words `runs/video-dna-v1/targ/audio/asr-words.json` |
| TARAS | 43 sung phrases, 0–193.9 s; ASR corrected against the burned-in captions on `dna/taras/sheets/sheet01..07.jpg` | corrected text written to `dna/work/taras_corrected.txt` (stress-marked by me) |
| OURS | 65 sung lines of song-v02 as actually sung (line-anchors `expected`, with master times) | `dna/film/line-anchors.json`; normative stress text `song-v02/stress/lyrics-with-stress-v04.txt`; the prose draft `lyrics_uk-v07.txt` differs in wording from what was sung, so I quote the sung text throughout and mention the prose draft only where it matters |

Everything under **Measured** comes from scripts in `dna/work/` (`measure.py`, `breath2.py`, `more.py`, `beat.py`, `sections.py`). Everything under **Judgment** is my ear as a songwriter and is labelled as such.

ASR corrections applied to TARAS (caption is the authority): `їй 32` → `їй тридцять два`; `робить ОТ` → `робить оте`; `Лоб, шок і підборіття ... вся щитана` → `Лоб, щоки, підборіддя, дві секунди і все зчитано`; `вітамін, серетину` → `вітамін C, ретинол`; `зупинися` → `зупинись`; `на носи щовечора` → `наноси щовечора`; `півментації` → `пігментації`; `як не було` → `як не була`; `На жаль, не співчуття` → `Не жаль, не співчуття`; `злились` → `злилась`.

## 1. Global measurements

| metric | ORIGINAL | TARAS | OURS (song-v02) |
|---|---|---|---|
| runtime of sung text | 188.5 s | 193.9 s | 239.4 s (+27 % vs Taras) |
| phrases / cards / lines | 65 cards (76 ASR breath-segments) | 43 phrases | 65 lines |
| words | ~471 (brief) | 303 (my tokenizer) / 310 (brief) | 389 tokens in sung lyric text (brief measured 447 on ASR output, which splits `П'ятнадцять` and mis-hears) |
| syllables | ~605 (EN heuristic) | 627 | 766 on the sung lyric text (brief: 843 on ASR text) |
| syllables per minute | ~193–199 | 193.7 | 192.0 |
| syllables per phrase: mean / median / max | — | 14.6 / 14 / 28 | 11.8 / 11 / 23 |
| syl/s inside a phrase: mean / max | — | 3.45 / 4.94 | 3.39 / 5.10 |
| mean syllables per word | ~1.3 (EN) | 2.07 | 1.97 |
| words of ≥4 syllables | — | 25 (8.3 %) | 19 (4.9 %) |
| words of ≥5 syllables | — | користується, перелічила, пігментації, фортепіано, називається | перепробувала ×2, доглядаєте, користуєшся, фортепіано |
| vocal rests ≥0.22 s in the vocal stem (htdemucs, −40 dB) | 16 rests, 11.1 s total (5.9 % of runtime) | 28 rests, 19.9 s total (10.3 %) | 18 rests, 8.7 s total (3.6 %) |
| rests ≥1.0 s | 2 | 5 | 1 |
| dashes / « » quotes / colons / ? / ! in the lyric text | none (cards carry no punctuation) | 0 / 0 / 4 / 1 / 0 | 21 / 8 / 8 / 4 / 1 |
| detected tempo | 103.4 bpm | 152 bpm (very likely 76 bpm read in double time; local tempo flips 152⇄103) | 103.4 bpm (same music as original) |
| phrase-final stress: masc / fem / dactylic | — | 9 / 23 / 11 | 16 / 42 / 7 |
| phrases starting with a function word or pronoun | — | 24/43, of which 7 start with `Я` and 4 with `Вона` | 38/65, of which 4 start with `Я`; the rest are prepositions/particles (`За`, `У`, `Із`, `На`, `До`, `Та`, `Ще`, `Її`, `Ніби`, `Бо`, `Якщо`) |
| `Потім` ("then") | `Then` ×5 | 4 | 0 |
| `сказала` ("said") | `said` ×5 | 4 | 1 |

Key reading of the table (measurement, then judgment):

- Same syllable rate everywhere (~192–199 syl/min). Taras and the original have the same amount of text in the same runtime. We keep the rate but sing ~140 more syllables, so the song is 45 s longer. Judgment: the length is a text-volume problem, not a tempo problem.
- Taras rests almost three times as much as we do (19.9 s vs 8.7 s of vocal silence ≥0.22 s; 5 rests over a second vs 1). Judgment: that is what "room to breathe" sounds like; our vocal is a 240-second continuous line.
- Taras's phrases are longer (median 14 syl) but they are single spoken clauses; ours are shorter (median 11) but chopped into 73 punctuation-sentences (mean 5.3 words each) and 21 dashes. Judgment: Taras writes talk; we write copy.

Per-card expansion of our text vs the original (EN syllables heuristic vs our UK syllables on the same card): mean ratio 1.37, median 1.20; 19 of 65 cards are >1.5× the original. Worst offenders: card 64 "The link's below" 4 → 16 syl; card 65 "If you need it" 4 → 11; card 38 "Throw the rest aside" 5 → 14; card 45 "By week six I was in shock" 7 → 18; card 47 "My skin more even than it had in" 9 → 20; card 51 "Mark's wife sat down a few seats from me" 9 → 18; card 63 "The cream is called Seora" 7 → 13.

Section budget (measured):

| section | ORIGINAL cards, dur, syl | TARAS phrases, dur, syl | OURS lines, dur, syl |
|---|---|---|---|
| hook | 1–3, 8.8 s, 30 | 1–2, 10.2 s, 32 | 1–3, 8.8 s, 29 |
| backstory | 4–11, 24.2 s, 85 | 3–9, 25.2 s, 80 | 4–11, 32.0 s, 101 |
| aisle / the look | 12–21, 30.0 s, 119 | 10–16, 44.0 s, 128 | 12–21, 39.0 s, 136 |
| car / damage | 22–26, 18.0 s, 50 | 17–19, 12.9 s, 48 | 22–26, 20.9 s, 58 |
| mentor | 27–38, 38.2 s, 118 | 20–28, 34.9 s, 131 | 27–38, 49.2 s, 149 |
| results | 39–48, 27.2 s, 88 | 29–34, 28.0 s, 86 | 39–48, 37.0 s, 127 |
| recital / turn | 49–62, 36.2 s, 100 | 35–42, 33.5 s, 107 | 49–62, 37.7 s, 126 |
| CTA | 63–65, 5.9 s, 15 | 43, 4.0 s, 14 | 63–65, 12.7 s, 40 |

Judgment: Taras tracks the original's section budget within ±6 s everywhere except the aisle (he lets the look linger, +14 s, on a slower tune). We overspend on mentor (+11 s, +31 syl), results (+10 s, +39 syl) and CTA (+7 s, +25 syl) — exactly the three sections where product/compliance text was added. The story sections (hook, car, recital) are close to budget.

Stress-to-beat measurement attempted (`beat.py`: stressed-syllable onset estimated from ASR word timing vs librosa beat grid): both songs sit at the random baseline (Taras 0.23–0.29 normalized distance, ours 0.26; baseline 0.25). ASR word timing at ~50–100 ms resolution vs 0.4–0.6 s beats cannot resolve this. Not used for judgment; stress judgments below are by ear from the text + the project's own diction audits.

## 2. Dimension by dimension

### 2.1 Singability (vowel load, clusters, long words)

Measured: Taras has more long words (8.3 % ≥4 syl) than we do (4.9 %), so "long words" is not our problem. Our specific clusters: `Та ж жінка` (line 57; the project's own audit flags "та+ж+жінка" merging), `І гелі, й маски` (line 33: vowel-glide-vowel pile-up `і-ге-лі-й-ма`), `Із сусіднього ряду` (line 15: `з-с-с` onset), `Ще не торкнувся її час` (line 8: `-вся-ї-ї-`), `В очах лише здивування` (line 52), `Й телефон лиши` (line 64: `й-те`), `перепробувала` sung twice (lines 14 and 33, 6 syllables with three unstressed after `-про́-`).

Taras examples that sing easily: `Решту викинь` (4 syl, 1.84 s — an instruction that lands as a punchline), `Плями стали світлішими` (open vowels, 8 syl), `Бо час до неї ще не дійшов` (9 monosyllable-heavy syllables, all open), `Не жаль, не співчуття, просто розгублено`.

Ours that sing well: `Дві секунди. Як болить!` (7 syl), `Всміхнулась — і ні краплі злості` (idiomatic, open vowels), `Гарна інша. Наче світла більше`, `Мамо, ти сьогодні інша`.

Judgment: singability per word is comparable; ours loses on (a) clitic clusters created by compression (`та ж ж-`, `й`, `із`), and (b) the same 6-syllable verb `перепробувала` used as a line-ender twice. Taras avoids both by writing whole spoken clauses instead of compressing.

### 2.2 Natural word stress on strong beats

Measured (project evidence, not my ear): the diction audit on our candidates heard `но́ву` for `нову́` (line 1) and `прожи́ли` (later replaced by `Були у шлюбі`); the prose draft `lyrics_uk-v07.txt` carries explicit stress marks on `нову́, бе́резень, до́ньку, Іри́на, кажу́, кре́ми, ге́лі, ма́ски, про́бувала, тонки́м, обіця́нок, нанесла́, до́ньчин, Нова́, Зали́ш` — i.e. fifteen words the pipeline already knows are at risk of being mis-stressed by the singer. The final review (`actual-audio-stress-review-v04.md`) accepts `шко́да` as a variant of the ordered `шкода́` and notes reduced attack on `зли́лась`, `від ме́не`, `до ме́не`.

Structural reason (judgment): our lines often open with one to three unstressed function syllables before the first stressed one — `Із сусі́днього`, `За пі́в ро́ку`, `На ши́ї`, `У то́й ти́ждень`, `До ме́не підійшла́`, `Якщо́ таки́й до́гляд` — which forces the singer to either swallow the pickup or put a false accent on it. Taras opens phrases on `Я`, `Вона`, `Потім`, `Лоб`, `Плями`, `Донька`, `Крем` — one pickup syllable at most, then a stressed content word. Phrase endings are feminine in both (Taras 23/43, ours 42/65); Taras has more dactylic endings (`бе́резень`, `зчи́тано`, `зсереди́ни`, `розгу́блено`, `щове́чора`), which sit naturally on a held note and a trailing two syllables; ours has more masculine endings on short function-ish words (`мене́`, `ча́с`, `кре́м`, `сама́`, `тобі́`, `лиши́`) that must be hit hard on the downbeat.

Which is closer: Taras. Rule of thumb that falls out: the first stressed syllable of a line should be the first or second syllable, and the word at the line end should be a content word with its normative stress on the penultimate or antepenultimate syllable, unless a masculine hit is wanted on purpose (`Дві секунди. Як болить!`, `Решту викинь`).

### 2.3 Syllables per phrase vs breath

Measured: Taras median 14 syl per phrase, max 28 (`Того тижня біля студії танців доньки. Кореянка, яку я бачу щодня, за п'ятдесят`, 7.76 s), with 28 vocal rests (19.9 s). Ours median 11, max 23 (`Лосини, без макіяжу, волосся зібране в пучок. Стою, дивлюся на крем.`, 6.92 s), but only 18 rests (8.7 s). Longest continuous vocal stretch without a ≥0.22 s rest: Taras 22 s / 85 syl (the mentor list, 105–127 s); ours 42.8 s / 133 syl (81–124 s: car → damage → mentor) and 32.5 s / 109 syl (156–188 s: results).

Judgment: the issue is not phrase length, it is the absence of rests between phrases. The original's tune has the same problem structurally (39 s / 158 syl stretch at 23–62 s) because it is sung speech; Taras's slower, freer melody buys him room. We cannot change the music here, but we can stop filling every gap with a new clause: e.g. lines 45–48 (`Минув ще час. Мій догляд тривав І знову шию порівняла: Вона помітно гладша, На вигляд — пружніша. І лінії впоперек Уже не так помітні. Я лишилась собою. І шию більше не ховаю.`) are 61 syllables in 18.2 s for what the original does in 32 syllables (`By week six I was in shock / The melasma was almost gone / My skin more even than it had in a decade / No foundation on`) and Taras in 33 (`На шостому тижні пігментації майже не було / Шкіра рівна, як не була десять років, без тонального`).

### 2.4 Register: colloquial vs literary

Measured word lists (judgment on the labels):

| | colloquial / spoken | literary / bookish / copy |
|---|---|---|
| ORIGINAL | `ran into`, `Cliché, I know`, `Stress will do that`, `Leggings, no makeup, hair in a bun`, `do the thing`, `that sting`, `honey`, `stop`, `Throw the rest aside`, `good different`, `by the way`, `The link's below` | — |

Concrete pairs on the same beat of the story:

- "the before version of the woman her husband loved first": Taras `Наче дивилась на стару версію жінки, яку її чоловік любив першою` (keeps the modern word `версію`, plain `любив`). Ours `Ніби я — лиш бліда тінь Жінки, яку її чоловік Кохав першою` (`бліда тінь` is a poetic cliché, `кохав` is the poetic verb, `лиш` is verse-only).
- "I walked to my car": Taras `Я дійшла до машини і просто сиділа`. Ours `Я пішла до авто. П'ятнадцять хвилин сиділа.` (`авто` is newspaper/ad Ukrainian; a woman telling this story says `машина`; line 22 also stretches 14 syl over 6.58 s, 2.13 syl/s, the slowest line in the song).
- "Holding your kids together will do that": Taras drops it. Ours `Була дітям опорою, Хоч сама ледь трималась` (`опора` is a written noun; the original is a verb phrase).
- "It felt right / No peeling, no sting": Taras `Я вичавила краплю, не пекло, не лущило` (sensory negations, past tense, body verbs). Ours `Я крем нанесла — легко ковзає, Зволожує шкіру` (the verbs of a product page).

Judgment: Taras is consistently in the register of a woman talking to a friend; ours flips between that register (opening, daughter scene, recital dialogue) and the register of packaging and legal copy (damage, mentor's advice, label, results, CTA). The original never leaves the first register even when it sells (`Use this every night / Throw the rest aside`).

### 2.5 Sentence length and syntax (fronting, dashes, quotes, subordination)

Measured: ours 21 dashes, 8 quotation openers, 8 colons, 73 full stops (mean 5.3 words per sentence). Taras captions: zero dashes, zero quotes; his 43 phrases are comma-joined spoken clauses. The original cards likewise carry no punctuation and read as run-on speech.

Fronted / inverted order in ours (judgment: meter-forced): `Андрія нова дружина` (genitive before noun; spoken order is `нова дружина Андрія`), `Я крем нанесла` (object before verb), `Через кілька місць від мене сіла` (verb-final), `Я в той день у машині сиділа` (verb-final), `Після зустрічі з нею я в той день у машині сиділа` (a 12-syllable relative paraphrase of "who made me sit in my car"), `До мене підійшла` (verb-final), `Ще не бачу — знаю, вона`. Taras keeps plain SVO: `Я дійшла до машини`, `Дружина Андрія сіла поруч`, `Після концерту вона підійшла, сказала`, `через яку я сиділа тоді в машині`.

Telegraphic fragments in ours: `Із сусіднього ряду — голос.` / `Ще не бачу — знаю, вона.` / `Глянула. Не жаль, не співчуття — В очах лише здивування.` / `Її думка — не головна.` / `У червні — концерт.` Judgment: these are ad-copy rhythms (noun-dash-noun); no one narrates like this. Taras narrates: `Потім почула її голос через ряд, я знала, що це вона`.

Quotation: ours stages five quoted exchanges with `«...»` and `Кажу:` / `Каже:` (present tense reporting). Taras reports speech with `спитала`, `сказала` in the past, no quote marks, and lets the quoted words be short: `Спитала: а ти чим?`, `Вона сказала: зупинись`, `мам, ти якась інша, світліша`. Original does the same (`Said honey, what are you using`, `She said stop`).

Tense: original all past. Taras all past (plus generic `робить/роблять`, habitual `бачу щодня`). Ours switches to the historic present for lines 13–17 and 32 (`Стою, дивлюся`, `Ще не бачу — знаю`, `Її погляд ковзає`, `Бачу її`, `Кажу:`). Judgment: a literary device that makes the aisle scene feel written.

Subordinate clauses: both use `який/яку` relatives about equally (Taras 4, ours 3); the difference is that Taras's relatives are short and idiomatic (`черговий крем, який знову не спрацює`) while ours nests (`Після зустрічі з нею я в той день у машині сиділа`).

Which is closer to the original: Taras, clearly.

### 2.6 Concreteness of images

Original concrete anchors: Target, thirty four, March, sixteen years, office, leggings/no makeup/bun, forehead-cheeks-jaw, two-second scan, car, fifteen (minutes), melasma/cheeks/forehead/lip, dance pickup, Korean woman, mid-fifties, Tri-Luma/vitamin C/retinol, pink tube, Korean writing, every night, squeezed, peeling/sting, three weeks, mirror, daughter, week six, decade, foundation, June, piano recital, few seats, car.

Taras keeps: 32, березень, 16 років, офіс, без макіяжу/пучок, черговий крем, голос через ряд, лоб/щоки/підборіддя, дві секунди, машина, пігментні плями на щоках, студія танців, кореянка, за п'ятдесят, кислоти/вітамін C/ретинол, рожевий тюбик, корейські літери, щовечора, краплю, пекло/лущило, три тижні, дзеркало, шостий тиждень, десять років, тональний, червень, фортепіано, поруч, машина. Drops: leggings, "fifteen", "a few seats" (→ `поруч`), "tried every single one", "she saw me", "your skin is a dream", "honey", "something I'd never tried", "it felt right", "brighter", "I was in shock", "by the way", "and I meant it too", "if you need it".

Ours keeps the biographical anchors (34, березень, 16, лосини/макіяж/пучок, дві секунди, авто, п'ятнадцять хвилин, танці, п'ятдесят п'ять, дзеркало, червень, фортепіано, кілька місць) and replaces or blurs the product-line anchors: `лоб, щоки, підборіддя` → `від обличчя до шиї`; `Tri-Luma, vitamin C, retinol` → `Креми для обличчя. І гелі, й маски`; `pink tube, Korean writing` → `баночку. go pure. Я стала читати:` + a 34-syllable label; `three weeks` → `кілька тижнів`; `week six` → `Минув ще час`; `decade / no foundation` → dropped; `Korean woman` → `Ірина`.

Judgment: neck-cream substitution explains some of this, but not the blur. A neck version can still be concrete: `Три тижні. Дзеркало.`, `Шостий тиждень`, `без шарфа` / `без високого коміра` (the neck equivalent of "no foundation on"), a named list of what she had tried (`сироватка, ролер, маска`), `тюбик` with a colour. The one place we are more concrete than Taras is the label instruction (`знизу вгору, тонкий шар`) — and that is the wrong kind of concrete for a song (instructions, not story).

### 2.7 Rhyme and assonance

Measured: neither text rhymes systematically. Adjacent line-finals sharing the last two letters: Taras 1 (`сиділа / побачила`), ours 1 (`сиділа / сказала`). Adjacent finals sharing the last vowel: Taras 7/42, ours 9/64. The original has incidental rhymes that carry the payoffs: `that sting` / `no sting`, `brighter` / `lighter`, `mattered` / `did`... (not a true rhyme) and the refrain `will do that` ×3.

Judgment: neither adaptation rhymes and that is fine for this format (sung speech); the original's music is in repetition rather than rhyme. Where we do reach for rhyme we get copy rhythm: `лиши / тобі`, `мрію / шию`. Taras's only intended sound-play is the parallel `її думка щось важить / моя нарешті важить`, which is the original's `mattered / did` couplet done properly. Ours drops the parallel (`Її думка — не головна. Бо нарешті я ціную Те, що думаю сама`) and with it the click of the ending.

### 2.8 Repetition and motifs

Original motifs and whether each adaptation keeps them:

| original motif | TARAS | OURS |
|---|---|---|
| `Then` (×5) as the story's spine | `Потім` ×4 | none |
| `Stress will do that / Crying every night will do that / Holding your kids together will do that` | `стрес це робить, сльози щоночі це роблять` (2 of 3, refrain kept) | `Стрес і сльози щоночі. Була дітям опорою, хоч сама ледь трималась` (refrain gone) |
| `felt sorry for me` → `Not pity, not sympathy, just confused` (pity bookends) | `наче їй мене шкода` → `Не жаль, не співчуття, просто розгублено` | `мов шкода мене` → `Не жаль, не співчуття — в очах лише здивування` (kept) |
| `sat in my car` → `made me sit in my car that day` | `просто сиділа` → `через яку я сиділа тоді в машині` (kept, same noun `машина`) | `до авто ... сиділа` → `у машині сиділа` (noun changes `авто`→`машина`, weakening the callback) |
| `light had gone out from inside` → `brighter` | `світло згасло зсередини` → `світліша` | `світло в мені згасло` → `Наче світла більше` (kept) |
| `her opinion mattered / mine finally did` | `її думка щось важить / моя нарешті важить` (verb repeated) | `Її думка — не головна / ціную те, що думаю сама` (parallel broken) |
| `She said stop` → `Throw the rest aside` (two imperatives) | `зупинись` / `Решту викинь` | `А шия? Їй щодня потрібен власний догляд` (no imperative) |

Judgment: Taras keeps five of the seven engines of repetition; we keep two and replace the rest with our own motif, `шия/догляд/щодня` (13 occurrences), which is the product's motif, not the character's.

### 2.9 Emotional arc per section

Judgment on the sung text (times from the anchors / ASR):

- Hook (0–9 s): all three hit hard and fast; ours `Зустріла в крамниці нову дружину колишнього. Їй — тридцять чотири. Дивилась, мов шкода мене.` is as good as Taras's; Taras drops "at the store" and changes 34 → 32.
- Backstory: Taras keeps the wry tone (`Банально, я знаю`, `Вона з тих, кому не треба старатись`). Ours has the same jokes but pads to 32 s with `Була дітям опорою, хоч сама ледь трималась` (a self-pitying line; the original's `Holding your kids together will do that` is dry).
- Aisle / the look: Taras's centrepiece; he spends 44 s here and keeps `Лоб, щоки, підборіддя, дві секунди і все зчитано` and `гірше за зневагу`. Ours spends 39 s, but in fragments and historic present; the hurt is stated (`Як болить!`, `Від нього ще гірше`) rather than shown.
- Car / damage: Taras 13 s, one breath: `Я дійшла до машини і просто сиділа / Я злилась не на неї, я злилась на те, що побачила / Пігментні плями на щоках, наче світло згасло зсередини`. Ours 21 s and the damage is described as a dermatologist would (`дрібні заломи, лінії впоперек, шкіра на вигляд в'яла`).
- Mentor: Taras 35 s, the mentor is blunt (`зупинись`, `Решту викинь`, `нанось щовечора`). Ours 49 s; the mentor is polite (`А шия? Їй щодня потрібен власний догляд`), and the heroine reads a label for 9 s (141.6–150.8 s). This is where a listener's attention goes.
- Results: Taras 28 s, two numbers and one visual (`без тонального`). Ours 37 s, no numbers, a comparison list and `Я лишилась собою. І шию більше не ховаю`, which is an ad tagline placed where the original has `No foundation on`.
- Recital / turn: both 34–38 s. Taras compresses to `Дружина Андрія сіла поруч / Не жаль, не співчуття, просто розгублено / ... / Ти чудово виглядаєш. Та сама жінка, через яку я сиділа тоді в машині / Я сказала дякую, не тому що її думка щось важить / А тому що моя нарешті важить`. Ours has the same beats, keeps `до речі` (good), but the final couplet is abstract and the callback to the car is a subordinate maze.
- CTA: original 5.9 s, three short lines. Taras 4.0 s, one line. Ours 12.7 s, four lines including a lead-form instruction.

### 2.10 How the CTA sings

Original: `The cream is called Seora / The link's below / If you need it` — 15 syllables, three cards, each a complete spoken sentence, masculine endings (`Seora`, `below`, `need it`), 5.9 s.

Taras: `Крем називається Ханбіт, посилання нижче` — 14 syllables, 4.0 s, one breath; `називається` (5 syl) is the only long word and it is a spoken one; drops "if you need it".

Ours: `go pure — це крем для шиї. Результат у кожної свій. / Посилання внизу. У формі — ім'я й телефон лиши, / Якщо такий догляд потрібен тобі.` — 40 syllables, 12.7 s, three sentences plus a conditional; contains a disclaimer (`Результат у кожної свій`), an instruction with a form (`У формі — ім'я й телефон лиши`), an English brand token sung with a Ukrainian clitic (`go pure — це`), and the clitic pile `й телефон лиши`. Line 64 alone is 16 syllables for "The link's below".

Judgment: the original's CTA works because it is the shortest, plainest thing in the song, said the way you would tell a friend. Ours is the only part of the song that is unmistakably an ad. If the form line and disclaimer must exist, they belong in the on-screen card and a spoken tag, not in the sung line; the sung CTA should be ≤16 syllables and end on the brand or the link.

### 2.11 Numbers and names

Measured (counts of number words): original 12 numeric anchors; Taras 11 (`тридцять два, шістнадцять, п'ять, півроку, дві, за п'ятдесят, три, шостому, десять` + `березень`, `червень`), dropping only "fifteen"; ours 11 tokens but two are the vague `кілька` (`кілька тижнів`, `кілька місць`), and the three result-timeline numbers (three weeks, week six, a decade) are gone.

Names: original — Mark, Target, Tri-Luma, Seora, "this Korean woman". Taras — Андрій, (store unnamed), Кореянка, кислоти/вітамін C/ретинол, Ханбіт (brand once, in the CTA). Ours — Андрій, Ірина (a new proper name for the mentor), `go pure` twice (line 36 and line 63), крамниця.

Judgment: naming the mentor `Ірина` costs a syllable-heavy introduction (`Там Ірина — бачу її майже щодня`) and removes the original's credibility cue (an older woman of a skincare culture); the brand sung twice is one more than the original. Numbers are the cheapest concreteness a song can buy; Taras keeps them, we spend them on `кілька`.

## 3. Scorecard (judgment; 1 = far from the original's plain-spoken first person, 5 = as close as Taras or closer)

| dimension | TARAS | OURS | note |
|---|---|---|---|
| singability per word | 4 | 3 | ours: clitic clusters, `перепробувала` ×2 |
| stress on strong syllables | 4 | 3 | ours: unstressed pickups, 15 flagged words |
| phrase length vs breath | 4 | 2 | ours: 42.8 s unbroken stretch, 8.7 s total rest |
| register | 5 | 2 | ours: ad/legal register in 4 of 8 sections |
| syntax | 5 | 2 | ours: 21 dashes, inversions, historic present |
| concreteness | 4 | 2 | ours: numbers blurred, list → categories |
| rhyme/assonance | 3 | 2 | neither rhymes; ours breaks the `важить` parallel |
| repetition/motifs | 4 | 2 | ours: 2 of 7 motifs kept, `шия` ×10 |
| emotional arc | 4 | 3 | ours: mentor/results/CTA over budget |
| CTA | 4 | 1 | ours: 40 syl, form instruction sung |
| numbers/names | 4 | 3 | ours: 3 timeline numbers lost, new name added |

Overall: Taras reads and sings like a woman telling the story; ours reads like a very carefully checked script that is being sung. The best of ours (hook, `ні краплі злості`, `Гарна інша`, `до речі`) proves the team can write the right register; the problem is what was added, not what was translated.

## 4. Top 10 testable rules to bring our lyrics to Taras / the original

Micro (word and phrase level):

1. **Plain past tense, no historic present.** Test: grep the sung text for present-tense narration verbs in narrative lines (`стою`, `дивлюся`, `бачу`, `ковзає`, `кажу`, `каже`); allowed only inside quoted speech or habitual statements (`бачу щодня`). Target: 0 in narration (Taras: 0; ours now: 6).
2. **One pickup syllable maximum before the first stressed syllable of a line.** Test: for each line, count unstressed syllables before the first normative stress; ≤1 in ≥90 % of lines. Fails now: `Із сусі́днього`, `За пі́в ро́ку`, `У то́й ти́ждень`, `До ме́не підійшла́`, `Якщо́ таки́й`, `Після зу́стрічі`.
3. **No clitic clusters and no 6-syllable verbs as line-enders.** Test: reject any line containing `й` + consonant-initial word, `та ж`, `із с-`, or a line-final word of ≥5 syllables whose stress is not on the penultimate. Fails now: `та ж жінка`, `й телефон лиши`, `гелі, й маски`, `перепробувала` ×2, `користуєшся`.
4. **Everyday nouns and verbs, not print words.** Keep a banned list for narration: `авто`, `кохав/кохання`, `тінь` as metaphor, `лиш`, `мов`, `опора`, `зважилась`, `завмерла`, `на вигляд`, `власний догляд`, `результат`, `форма/номер`, `обіцянок`. Test: 0 hits in sung lines. Replace with `машина`, `любив`, `тільки`, `наче`, `тримала дітей`, `наважилась/спитала`, `стала/зупинилась`.
5. **Punctuation budget per 10 lines: ≤2 dashes, ≤1 quotation pair, 0 colons before reported speech.** Reported speech goes through `сказала`/`спитала` + comma, with the quote ≤6 syllables (`Спитала: а ти чим?`, `мам, ти якась інша`). Test: count punctuation in the sung text; ours now 21 dashes / 8 quotes / 8 colons in 65 lines, Taras 0 / 0 / 4.
6. **Keep the original's numbers, all of them, and add none.** Test: the numeric anchors 34, March, 16, 5 years / 6 months, Saturday, 2 seconds, 15 minutes, mid-fifties, 3 weeks, week 6, 10 years, June must each appear once as a number word; `кілька` is not allowed where the original has a number. (Compliance can live on the card; the character may say "three weeks" about herself.)

Macro (section and whole song):

7. **Syllable budget per section ≤ 1.15 × the original's syllables for that section, and the whole text ≤ 640 syllables** (Taras 626, original ~605). Test with `sections.py`: hook 30, backstory 85, aisle 119, car 50, mentor 118, results 88, recital 100, CTA 15 (+15 % each). Now over: backstory 101, mentor 149, results 127, recital 126, CTA 40. Cut before you compress: Taras dropped fourteen sub-thoughts (leggings, fifteen, honey, brighter, in shock, by the way, if you need it...) and nobody misses them.
8. **Keep the story's spine words and the three refrains.** Test: `Потім` ≥3 times at the original's `Then` positions (he left / I heard her voice / she smiled / June happened); the triple `... це робить` refrain for stress / tears / kids; the `не тому, що її думка ... а тому, що моя ...` parallel with the same verb repeated at the end. Ours currently: `Потім` 0, refrain 0, parallel broken.
9. **Product motif ≤ character motif.** Test: total occurrences of product words (`шия/шию/шиї`, `догляд`, `крем`, brand) must be fewer than occurrences of the story's own repeated words (`потім`, `сказала`, `машина`, `світло/світліша`, `шкода/співчуття`). Now product words ≈ 20 vs story motifs ≈ 8; Taras ≈ 6 vs 16.
10. **The sung CTA is one breath: ≤16 syllables, ≤5 s, one sentence, brand named once in the whole song, ends on `посилання нижче/внизу`.** Disclaimer and lead-form instructions go on the end card or a spoken tag after the music, never into the sung line. Test: `syl(CTA lines) ≤ 16`, `brand tokens in sung text == 1`. Now: 40 syllables, 12.7 s, brand ×2.

A worked example of rules 1–5 applied to our lines 15–18 (current: `Із сусіднього ряду — голос. / Ще не бачу — знаю, вона. Вона мене впізнала. / Її погляд ковзає вниз — Від обличчя до шиї. / Дві секунди. Як болить!`, 46 syl): `Потім почула її голос через ряд. / Ще не бачила — знала: вона. / Вона глянула — обличчя, шия. / Дві секунди. І все зчитано.` (38 syl, past tense, one dash per two lines, first stress on syllable 2, spoken relatives, the neck stays in the picture).

## Appendix C. Limits of this analysis

- No human listening was done here; sung stress judgments rely on the text plus the project's own diction audits (`reviews/targeted-diction-v01`, `song-v02/stress/actual-audio-stress-review-v04.md`). The ASR-vs-beat alignment test was run and found to be at noise level; it is reported but not used.
- Vocal rests were measured on htdemucs vocal stems with silencedetect at −40 dB / 0.22 s; reverb tails shorten measured rests equally for all three, so the comparison is fair but absolute values are conservative.
- English syllable counts use a heuristic (vowel groups, silent-e), so per-card ratios are ±1 syllable per card; the brief's 199 syl/min figure and my 192.6 agree within that error.
- Taras word count differs between the brief (310) and my tokenizer (303) because of hyphen/apostrophe handling; syllables 620 vs 626 for the same reason and one caption correction.
